I neglected the blog again! D: Here’s a new illustration done for Kiseki magazine‘s editorial page. For some reason, I had this idea that things will be much faster in watercolor, and well.. I don’t know if I was right or wrong. Overall the time spent is probably shorter, but when working with watercolor I ended up having to take a lot of pauses in between to wait for the paint to dry, so actually I did the coloring over a few days. As for inking, it’s definitely faster than in the computer! I tried to do it kazuaki’s way, which I once saw in a tutorial, first sketch on paper, then scan and ink on the computer, then print out and ink it again (actually her steps were more complicated since at the end she inked everything again in the computer ==) I think I’m still most comfortable with hand drawing rather than using the tablet, just have a problem with scanning quality.

I think at the end I’m only 70% satisfied with the coloring.. went way overboard with the colors : P I need to work on positive/negative space and just light/shadow in general.

Errm, just wanted to try  typing more about the drawing so it doesn’t seem like just a repeat post of dA XD; Era, put your new pic!!!

I don’t really get the inking~ why would you scan a sketch onto the computer, ink it, then print out and ink again orz I mean wouldn’t the computer inked version be fine? Or if you want to hand ink then just ink with a light box over the sketch?
I usually sketch on paper, scan onto computer to adjust any perspective/proportion or any other mistakes, print then line by hand.

And yes inking by hand is WAYYY faster~ =w=+

I shall put it up soon!! >O<

Well yeah mine is similar to what you said – when in the stage where i inked on the comp I fix up perspectives etc, but it’s still considered sketchy, and then I print out and do my final lines by hand

Although in kazuaki’s tutorial, she (or he?) did pencil sketch, scan and inked on the comp (from the thumbnail I would’ve just colored those lines already but anyways), then print out and do pencil lines again by seperating each element onto several tracing papers.. so like, one person on each trace, and weapons would be on a separate trace etc.. in complete detail, then she scan all of traces in and compose them into one pic. but then she inks over everything again on the computer.. which I thought was a bit crazy. but I guess she did the pencil so she could add all the details – and then she ink over them digitally for the better quality lines :S ?????
